Net, did you calculate how many barrels of CO2 are buried in Austraia? 10000 cubic kilometres is a LOT of barrels.

Rather than dig up the Nullarbor plains, it would be better to note the name itself ["no trees"] and plant a few billion trees, deionizing sea water to wet their roots. That would suck up a LOT of CO2 and produce an economically useful product. Perhaps a fast growing cellulose crop would be a good fuel.
