Seems like a fair exchange. Dump your credit rating, but have the bank (or some federal bailout) cover for a $100K shortfall. If that makes banks and credit cards wary of lending you money in the future, so be it.

It is a good point. They can make their decision. Realistically, however, credit ratings are very temporary. When you get motivated lenders, they don't give a damn.
