They're now financing cars, which last 5 years if you are lucky,

Even the junk Detroit put out in the 70's last 10 years or more. The last car we traded that we bought new was a 93 Dodge Caravan and we traded it for a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I don't borrow money for a car, and will never again for a house. Its stupid for a car, if right out of college you can find a good used car for a couple or three thousand dollars. Then trade up every two or more years as you increase your savings.
