Sunk cost is exactly the point.

The point about sunk costs is that they shouldn't have a major impact on decisions going forward. Changing direction now, doesn't recover the costs, so they shouldn't be a factor in the decision.

It may be, but it isn't a major factor.

As for budget deficits, its only a small part of our total spending.
