I have great love of country. I sort of view the post war role of America as sort of forced upon us. Its a new sort of white mans burden as the former white men of europe first lost their power but after that was regained lost their will. The US isnt great at this as vietnam and iraq point out. We start with national interest and always end up in ideology in supporting and defending our efforts. Americans dont like to be mercenaries so they need high sounding reasons for our actions and those always are hyped and get us into trouble. Eastern Europe, Russia, China, India are asserting themselves more and perhaps will pick up some of the slack. That isnt always a good thing either.
I consider myself as a progressive. I look for stuff i supported to become outdated and jump ship. New Deal was classic case as is neocon and extreme free market folks now. I think you are an open minded guy too and i would ask you to reconsider your choice for president in light of mccains reactionary views and campaign. You can be essentially a conservative and vote for Obama as long as you pray a little for then next president and not root against him like shorty will.
