The benefits are mostly avoiding losses. There may be some benefit beyond that, but any such benefits at least the large ones, would be more long term, and much more uncertain. The losses that we could avoid is a more destabilized, and radical Iraq, and the perception among islamofacist violent radicals that they have won a victory (or more importantly the perception among potential violent radicals that the islamofacists have won a victory). Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory is rarely a good idea.
