Afghanistan is in the ME and we're at war there. How is oil the reason for it?

Oil clearly has nothing to do with our Afghan involvement. Nor is our involvement in Afghanistan an "investment". We went there to deal with a threat which had attacked us. We want to prevent that threat from returning which is why we still have forces there.
-----------------------------------------------------
Although Iran has oil, the conflict over its nuclear weapons program is clearly not driven by oil, but rather by the threat that a radical (a radical anti-American regime btw) regime with nuclear arms would represent.
------------------------------------------------------
Oil also doesn't drive the Israel-Palestine conflict or the Lebanese civil conflict. Neither of those countries have any oil.
-----------------------------------------------------
As for Iraq, of course, it and the Persian Gulf are strategically important because so much of the worlds oil reserves are located in the region. If the region were dominated by one hostile power, it would be bad for the world as a whole. That would be true even if we imported nothing at all from the region. Others would import from there and the region would be of economic importance to the world as a whole. BTW recognition of the strategic importance of the Persian Gulf is not a Bush or a "neocon" policy, it dates back to the Carter administration when he declared the free flow of oil from the Persian Gulf was a "vital interest" of the US which we'd go to war to preserve.

None of this makes the Iraq war or any other war an "investment" imo.

---------------------------------------------------------

BTW as an historical point, we went to war with Hitler because Nazi Germany declared war on us.
