Hi Frank,

>>Is the way of the future "larger contiguous blocks" of spectrum, or software defined radio capable of agile frequency selection from a multitude of blocks in what are commonly regarded now as disparate bands of spectrum?<<

The trend is to wider channels (.11n is 40/20 MHz, and VHTL6 will use 80 MHz and 160 MHz channels TDD). "Larger contiguous blocks" are for FDD (to make duplexer implementation easier). TDD can tune up to +/- 10% of center frequency, for 2.5 GHz center frequency, a less costly design could tune 2.3 GHz to 2.7 GHz.

Agile frequency change takes about a millisecond for inexpensive (20 ppm frequency source) radios (e.g., 802.11g to 802.11a, or 850 MHz to 1900 MHz), and can be made faster at some cost.
