WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- U.S. accounting regulators should defer new rules on off-the-books assets until January 2010 to avoid "serious unintended consequences" on the asset-backed securities market, a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee wrote.

"Changes to securitization accounting could have a dramatic impact on the economy, the capital markets and consumers seeking credit," Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Ala., wrote in a July 22 letter to Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Christopher Cox and Financial Accounting Standards Board Chairman Robert Herz.
