Not much relief from the heat & humidity in Texas, except maybe the dry, high-altitude area around Alpine.

Sounds like an a/c overload in Yuppieville. I have a singleladyfriend who decided she never again wanted to be inconvenienced by a power outage, so she had a generator installed -- it's powered by her natural gas line and comes on automatically when her electricity goes out. I could live like that.
