The excess heat energy is radiated away at the speed of light. Contact and convection processes account for just ~5% of the energy transmitted on average. The amount of excess heat energy stored in the surface will be detemined by ficks equations as indicated here.

Fortunately when the sun goes down, the air is not at just two degrees Kelvin so there is lots of heat around to radiate up from the ground and back down again from the sky. A nice blanket of atmosphere to keep us all cozy.
