I was thinking the same thing. The reports of first gen Apple iPhone web use and Google hit rates in the US, even with that phone running on AT&T's EDGE network, must have NOK, RIMM and other smartphone makers worried.

Apple's 3G iPhone and its Safari browser, which Apple ported over from the Mac, make MSFT Mobile Windows, NOK's Symbian software, RIMM's browser, and Palm's Blazer look pathetic.

With the 3G iPhone releasing in 70 countries worldwide, NOK and other manufacturers had better get off the pot and focus on delivering a mobile user interface that people will use as a mobile computing platform, rather than a jazzed up cell phone that can do web stuff just OK.

So you may be right, and NOK has decided to quit worrying about the underlying technology and leave it to QCOM and others so they can focus on the user interface. NOK's 100% takeover of the Symbian platform will look silly if Apple takes over the high end high margin smartphone market as it did with its iPod's.
