I attended a Reagan rally about a week before the 1980 election. Someone standing near me asked, "What's black and glows in the dark?" followed by, "Iran, 24 hours after Reagan takes office." It was a joke of course, but Iran apparently saw it as being uncomfortably close to reality, based on the outcome of the Hostage Crisis. Carter's administration exited in disgrace after the Iran Hostage Crisis, with the return of the hostages on Reagan's inauguration day.
