I think the Austrian is Hong Kong based. YOu also mentioned the Swiss that lives there and both have something in common. The Austrian and the Swiss are shaped by the landscape. They don't have an horizon because their country is mountaineous. This shapes the mind-set of the people. Add to that the fact -as it happens with Scotland- they could not count with natural resources. Such countries produced a big chunk if not the majority of the economic though and theories. You heard about the Scots stereotype of being too frugal, don't you? It wouldn't surprise me that Austrians and Swiss chose HK as a base. It is not a judgement of it is good or bad. It just is: It is a rock and devoided of natural resources. Perfect lair for a Swiss-Austrian.

I spent a great deal of effort analysing what people are made of. For what we see in the world -not only in the economy but in all fields is the result of people and not of some natural law. I keep saying: countries are shaped by people and people are shaped by country. Therefore if you know people -what they really are you end up having a grasp on whta drives economic sectors. I go back centuries to discover what turned a country in what it is today. (You do that to China. and do it for all countries that I find significative or happen to get in touch with its people.) Note that there is the real country and what it displays to internal and external consumption. Example: see how people react when we tell them what the US really is as opposed to waht they were lead to believe.
