MM, I have no desire to restart conversations that reargue any of the positions I presented. I think we have all discussed them to their near death. My only point was, to return to the beginnings of our conversation, to remind you that the right has tried to impose their social views on the rest of the population.

I'm not even asking what your views on these issues are. Just to acknowledge that the right has done what you accuse "liberal thinkers", as I recall your phrase, of having done.

1. On the Roe v Wade issue, we would clearly disagree as to when life begins but it makes no sense for us to discuss it here. We are extremely unlikely to find any basis for agreement from which we could discuss it.

2. We would disagree, vigorously, as to whether discrimination and segregation still plague American society. And, thus, whether institutional answers are required. I don't think my belaboring you with all the data that underlines that would get us down the road any distance. Again, I don't see a basis for conversation starting.

3. On the gays and lesbians issue, I'm puzzled by your comments (a) that they have all the rights others do, and (b) they want rights others don't have. There is much to be discussed there but I assume we agree that if gays and lesbians lack some rights that others have, they should receive them. If that is the case, then perhaps we could discuss marriage. Are you bothered by the denial of that equal right to them?

On your point about ACROSS, I don't know that group. But the gay and lesbian advocacy groups on my campus, both student and faculty, welcome straights. I joined. And felt welcome. Some of my best friends, etc.

As for the second amendment discussion, I gather we would disagree with no basis for a beginning conversation. And I do recall lengthy conversations on the thread about this topic. No doubt, everyone is tired of it and hope you and I don't start it up again.

So I'll take a pass. But one of these days I'll do some reading on it. The kind Scalia should have done. And, if I learn anything and if you're still posting on SI, I'll give you a ring.
