What was it when he left 8 years later, 2 or 3 trillion?

Carter was planning to address inflation the same way that Reagan did, through higher interest rates, with the help of the FED. I believe it was actually Carter that appointed Volker with that in mind.

It was Reagan that turned over the "keys to the treasury" to the Industrial Military Complex, which Eisenhower had specifically warned against.
