I listened to a video or tape of the 911 call associated with that incident. At the time, I thought the guy had a serious problem and made the wrong choice given today's laws and situation. The use of deadly force is only justified to defend the life of one's self or another. The guy should have used better judgment.

Suppose that the robbers then came to his house and indicated intent to rob him by force. In that instance the guy would have been justified in using deadly force to stop them, as he would be in defense of his own life.

I think the proper course of action would have been to hold the robbers at gun point until police got there. Not being at the scene, I do not know whether that was possible.
