People don't acclimatize to pollution, they just choke. Their lungs secrete mucus to try to save them, hoiking it up. It's not ideal for aerobic exercize.

20 years ago I'd set out on an evening for a run around Woking area near London and I'd go a few hundred metres then give up and go home. The air was too disgusting to breathe. Beijing's air is worse than that.

I can't see marathon runners taking it on unless they have a serious chance at winning. The 10 km and other heavy breathers won't like it either.

Running in a mask would cut oxygen flow, so that wouldn't be attractive.
