thanks for the input... It's hard for me to fully appreciate the complexities of the economy but I agree with the main thesis of this thread that there are some serious fundamental issues with the US economy and by default... the world economy. Not convinced that it leads to a global meltdown but definitely a serious situation.

I will follow discussions here with interest and throw in my devalued 2 cents when I can.

The time may have arrived when the Fed will have to create new money to prop up the market in treasuries.

What statistic would be the earliest sign that this has begun?

The 2% jump in the last six weeks or so of the currency component of M1 probably has to do with uneasiness about the banking system.
