"From a friend who works at Merrill:"

Wow. Definitely has that circling the drain feel to it.

He certainly needs to re-evaluate his employment opportunities...

While going down with a sinking ship sounds all heroic and noble, it really sucks. The ones who bear the real responsibility for planting the charges that blew the holes in the hull get bruised egos and million dollar severance packages. Likely they get to parachute into another job paying the big bucks at another company they can fly into the ground. While you are left with trying to explain a hole in your resume and unemployment while running up your credit cards.

All bitterness aside, if ML folds, that isn't a good sign at all. Bear-Stearns wasn't a huge surprise, but ML has been regarded as pretty safe.

The ride is fixin' to get a little bumpy.

ML isnt going down the drain but no doubt it is not a pleasant place to work. I would leave too but that might be the idea of mgt is to make it uncomfortable enough to create voluntary resignations, minimize firings and severance issues. Actually this is the beginnings of new Merrill.

"yet they want me in at 9 on the dot, "

On Wall Street folks are routinely in by 7am or 8am. No wonder this guy is not a happy camper. Another latte drinking slacker without a wall street work ethic.

From a friend who works at Merrill:

part of the reason i want to leave my job is because things have gotten so out of hand about how we work and this and that, that i no longer feel like they're looking at the quality of the work i do, and are looking at little nitpicking things which mean nothing

budgets are so tight - they cut our hours down, yet they want me in at 9 on the dot, even tho they are letting people leave early. they are like nazis about us talking to each other, all this craziness ive never had to deal with becaiuse they're worried about the company going down

That person up above needs to leave his job. MER is a total mess. The deal they did on Monday to get rid of their CDO crap is being portrayed as something very positive. It ain't. If you read the fine print, MER is still on the hook for the CDOs if down the road, they turn out to be completely worthless. In effect, MER paid to get someone to take the garbage off their hands.

Having said all that, the person up above is obviously one of Gramm's American whiners that needs to be blindfolded, taken out back and shot.
