It's late, I'm tired, and I can't follow what you wrote about rents and the rest, so I'll just stop addressing that and wish you luck (and be jealous if you pull it off). Who doesn't have dreams of this nice passive income and appreciation. I think it's early in the downcycle for both, but maybe you found a winner.

As far as engineering jobs-- Solar is obviously up; I think Web 2.0 is on the downside; Biotech is probably up. Chips and computers will be down. If it's consumer oriented, it's toast. If it's enterprise related, it might see a little weakness. These are my WAGs.

Remember that techies aren't the only people in the Valley. There are real-estate agents, bankers, Airline-related, etc... Unemployment in SV is up.
