Don't blame the wrong things - cell phones are great, they provide freedom and safety and make it possible to keep in touch :-) But "consumerism" sounds bad - what is it? I don't recognize the problem. Is it about ads and commercials? When I compare U.S. lives with my life, I'm amazed about the amount of ads and commercials in American lives. Here, it's not legal to call people to sell them stuff, it is not legal to knock on their door to sell stuff, we can opt out of getting ads in our mailboxes, and the biggest TV channels are ads-free. Ads are also banned in traffic because they may distract drivers.
