Jim, you are missing my point. They aren't morons, which implies that they cannot connect the dots, etc. They are, for the most part, brilliantly selling us down the river to achieve their own goals.

Expanded gov't programs that are missing just one component: funding (e.g. no child left behind, prescription drug plan, Iraq, mortgage loss backstopping).

Allowing the infrastructure to decay sounds stupid, because it is, but only from a frame of reference that the country should prosper in the future. If the frame of reference is get what you can and get the hell outta Dodge, then of course you'd let the place go to pieces.

But part of the reason we have 'mis'-leaders is that we, ourselves, are stupid. E.g. we hugely subsidize sports stadiums which only translate into a channeling of tax dollars into the pockets of a few people.
