True, diesel engines are more efficient than petrol, but not 45% in small car engines. Have a look at this serious diesel brute which runs at 50% thermal efficiency. people.bath.ac.uk But you can't squeeze that into a little two seater car.

Here's thermal efficiency for diesel versus gasoline: en.wikipedia.org <Adjusting the numbers to account for the energy density of diesel fuel, one finds the overall energy efficiency of the aforementioned paragraph is still about 20% greater for the diesel version, despite the weight penalty of the diesel engine. > Comparing comparable engines, not a little one with that monster.

Anyway, it's the total experience which matters, not just cherry picking line losses, increased diesel thermal efficiency etc. My point was a simple one and a correct one, which was that with crude oil at $130 a barrel, the economic pressure is towards central electricity generation and all-electric vehicles, not hybrids.

Details are critical. Adding them all up correctly is vital. That's what vehicle buyers do when they pick their wheels.
