We may be heading for exactly the same sort of scenario after 8 years of a Republican President and 12 years of a Republican controlled Congress.

If Carter had been reelected, inflation would have come down and the Country would have had the same sort of economic boon, but we wouldn't have had the beginnings of "Debt to America", that we got from Reagan.
