Hi Jim. I must say, you've crafted a great list of questions. Perhaps someone can point to an analysis that's already been done (it would seem only logical that such an holistic accounting must surely have been performed already, but who knows.. ) or maybe something Rob S. or Peter E. might like to add to what ftth has already keyed in, or may add. I'll be staying tuned, for sure.

My earlier interests in this area go back to the mid-to-late Nineties, when VoIP was first emerging as a plausible substitute in both the wireline and wireless solution areas. The focus then was on VoIP codec performance amid a sea of evolving compression standards, each demanding of differing levels of multiple resources (akin to the list you've compiled), and dual-/multi- mode tradeoffs.

The state of the art in respect to these comparative areas, which I've not kept abreast of very well since then, has advanced steadily and gotten away from anything I might have considered earlier as mastery. So I'll defer to the wireless mavens here and wait to see what they have to offer.
