Maybe not. He might just be writing from the viewpoint of an elite. If you trade in every couple of years and buy luxury cars and/or SUVs, then he has a point. All of them have inflation sensors, come with platinum plugs and have sophisticated electronics. Other than changing oil and putting gas in them, that is all they require for peak performance for the duration of a short ownership.

However, the average age of a US car is 9.2 years as of 2007. And over 40% were at 11+ years. No inflation sensors on those. Probably no platinum plugs unless the owners put them in. In addition, dare I say, I doubt if most of them were top of the line vehicles when new. And they definitely need someone to make sure everything is operating properly like the PCV valve and the oxygen sensor(s).

So he may not be as much partisan on this issue as he might be out of touch.
