There are tax benefits, and tax penalties. What the net is varies according to the specific situation of the individuals involved. "Benefits" isn't limited to direct cash payments, or tax breaks. Formal recognition could even perhaps be considered a benefit, or if it isn't, well I've generally said "benefits and recognition". No, I'm talking about simple things like being able to visit your loved one in the hospital Not a matter of government policy, and not something that requires a change in government policy in order to change. or being legally considered to be next of kin should one partner die intestate That's one of the benefits I was talking about. I was not using "benefits" to equal "pork", or anything like that.
