There are tax benefits, and tax penalties. What the net is varies according to the specific situation of the individuals involved.

"Benefits" isn't limited to direct cash payments, or tax breaks. Formal recognition could even perhaps be considered a benefit, or if it isn't, well I've generally said "benefits and recognition".

Not a matter of government policy, and not something that requires a change in government policy in order to change.

That's one of the benefits I was talking about. I was not using "benefits" to equal "pork", or anything like that.
