$10 Gas Doesn't Change Dem Senator's Mind on Oil Drilling

By Noel Sheppard, Media Analysis Center
August 1, 2008

There was a rather extraordinary confrontation on the Senate floor Thursday involving offshore oil drilling that got very little press coverage.

Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kent.) tried to get Democrats to vote on a measure that would open up such drilling if the price of gasoline reached a certain level.

Although the "bidding" eventually reached $10 a gallon, Colorado's Ken Salazar continually objected.

In back-and-forth bickering on the Senate floor Thursday, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell attempted to force Democrats to vote on a measure opening up coastal waters for drilling when gas reached $4.50, $5 or even $7.50 a gallon.

"If $5-gallon gasoline isn't an emergency, I have to ask what is an emergency?" McConnell said.

"It's a phantom solution," countered Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo, noting that such drilling would not affect gas prices in the short term.

Oddly, Google news and LexisNexis searches produced little coverage of this incident. Isn't it newsworthy that Democrats wouldn't expand drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf even if gasoline reached $10 a gallon?

I guess not.

It just rang hollow to me. I was really hoping for a more compelling read from someone who holds such an important position in our government. It just rang hollow to me. I was really hoping for a more compelling read from someone who holds such an important position in our government. After seeing her on The View the other day and liking her, I checked out her book from the library. I read it in a few hours - It didn't have much substance and left me wondering why she didn't put more thought or feeling into it if she was going to bother writing a book. Maybe it's because of the advice she was given by a colleague to keep conversations short... Subject - Question - Reaction, I believe was the advice she cites in the book. That's how the book reads, kind of like an advertising brochure. Not very satisfying at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ghost written for the phantom mind., July 31, 2008

Did she even read her own book? This reads like so many political books where we slap the pages together, plaster an impressive photo on the cover and shove it our the door and down our throats.

How about a reasoned argument for the bone headed decisions she has made as Speaker? How about a justification for $5 gas? Come on Nancy try to articulate your ideals.

The worst read in a long time. Couldn't she afford a better ghost writer? Should the American people take lesson's from the leader of the 9% Congress? Less time spent on book writing , more time for the peoples business.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring & Uninspiring, July 30, 2008
By Tim4Hillary (El Cerrito, CA) - See all my reviews
I found Nancy Pelosi's book to be quite boring and uninspiring. Is she trying to follow in Hillary's footsteps or something? Given how poorly this book is written I would say "Don't quit your day job!" but then I think of what a failure she has been on that front too.

1.0 out of 5 stars An empty book from an empty soul, July 31, 2008
By C. W. Smith (South Burlington, VT United States) - See all my reviews

I dont understand why so many people are surprised that this book is a failure. Pelosi is a vaccuous, empty suit who represents an amoral left-wing cesspool of a district. It's only natural that her book is going to be nothing more than a collection of egocentric blathering, offering nothing more than rehashed platitudes designed to make her appear smarter than she is - which is, admittedly, not much of a challenge. Hilary may be unlikeable, but at least she's got substance.

This book offers nothing more than hollow reinforcements of Pelosi's own delusions of grandeur. She is not a role model for our children, she brings absolutely nothing new to the discussion, and her advice sounds like a disjointed collection of fortune cookie readings.

However, the book will probably be well received by readers in her congressional district. This book offers the kind of shallow appeasement and empty talking points that their limited cognitive functions like to rally around.

Pelosi should stick to what she's good at, whatever that is.
Don't waste your money.

What a struggle to get to the end..horrid written book with a shallow to low tide message! Not a book for motivation or leadership read and example. Pelosi needs to find better ghost writer next time. horrid read and struggle from cover to cover..no wonder her rating is 9% not much between the face lift!

A typical political fluff book that's a waste of time. Now I know why congress has a 13% approval rating. This book should bring it down to the single digits.

This book is very self-centered. Pelosi is not a good role model for America's young women. Pelosi has done pooly in her role as the house speaker. She failed to deliver her promises to the voters. Her congress has the lowest rating in history. I didn't learn anything worthy from her book.
