Why do they have to know exactly when OCS oil will hit the market but they don't need to know when the alternative energy research will produce fruit?

This is a hell of a good point and one McCain ought to be making.

While alternatives are coming, it is an absolute crapshoot as to when. If you don't drill in the meantime, you eliminate any backstop in the event alternatives don't pan out as quickly as some expect.

The Dems' position is just absolutely stupid in every respect.

I noticed on the news that McCain isn't calling Obama's flip/flop that -- he's saying, basically, that Obama hasn't really changed his opposition to drilling based on Obama's conditions.

Republicans are claiming that OCS drilling will provide nearly immediate relief from high oil prices......as in "drilling our way out of the oil crisis". No one is making a similar claim with alternative energy.

We know how to produce oil. We don't know how to produce electric cars that will go 400 miles on a charge and can be recharged in minutes. When are we going to get that?

Exactly. Those things are in the developmental stage. There is no immediate relief from high oil prices. It will take at least ten years to transition away from our addiction to oil.

Do you think no money s/b invested in electric vehicles unless we get a guarantee on when the payoff will come?

Straw man.
