As you point out yourself, every player in an information cascade acts rationally.

The main reason not to use the term "avalanche" is, that avalanches usually come to a standstill at the end, whereas information cascades can terminate in various ways. Sometimes, information cascades trigger new information cascades, making something oscillate. A good example is how software projects are managed: Every 5-10 years, there is a new paradigm that goes into the opposite direction of the previous, even though the optimal solution is often in the middle.
