Here's some obscure news from a place in rural Wisconsin where I once spent a few weeks working as a farm hand. Some folks there are now planning an operation to produce the special sand used as proppant for the hydraulic fracturing of oil and gas wells. Proppant is now in high demand because of the hot new shale gas plays...

Canadian Sand and Proppant proposes to mine 180 acres on property owned by Robert Schindler and Jeffrey Sikora, seeking sand with special qualities suitable for fracturing oil and natural gas wells to increase production. The so-called “frac” sand would be trucked to a Chippewa Falls processing plant, then shipped out by rail to wells around North America.

Here's a US company that makes ceramic proppant. I have no position or recommendation on this, just following up on one aspect of the shale gas story... carboceramics.com
