nope, study some history. The Chinese have been speaking in one main language for over 3000 years since the first empire of Qin Dynasty during which the Great Wall was built.

There are the Han the majority and 5% of minorities. But Han don't all speak Mandarin as their first language (though the written Chinese language is the same across China (same in the Arab World for example - one written language and many local very different dialects). So Cantonese, or Wu (Shanghai), or Min (Fujian) speakers are part of the ethnic majority, the Han.
