How much of our imports are essential, assuming we curb our energy use to, say, what it was back in the seventies? In WWII we were essentially completely self-sufficient, and civilian life was not that bad. In the mid-sixties the GDP was around $700 billion nominal, exports were $35 billion, or 5% of GDP, and imports around $30 billion, or 4% of GDP. We certainly were not depended on international trade then.
