But that doesn't change the fact that my overall "profits" in this context or analogy, or the closest analogue to them, is my after tax income, not my investments. If I "changed my thinking" about that than I would be changing it to assume something that is incorrect. No you wouldn't. When you look at a company, do you calculate their profits before or after expenses? You are confusing revenue and profit. Your revenue is your paycheck, your profit is what you save.
