What people like to eat - you could probably call that cultural. But there could be a genetic component too.

Some people whose ancestors lived a long time in poor environments have a "thrifty genotype" making it easier to put on weight:


And then there is just poverty where you can't afford better foods and depend on starches and carbos to fill you up. You also tend to be undereducated and not know the nutritional values of different food groups. There is a lot of obesity in the South......you might want to look beyond DNA and culture for the answers.
