Lane,

Why are you citing the two separately. Is the effect of the index not subsumed in the load? I just look at load. Should I be looking at index, too?

They are related, but they are not the same thing. Best analogy I can think of is car's fuel consumption (in miles per galon) and actual fuel consumption (in galons) for a trip visiting a grandma.

Glycemic index in the mpg. Spinach differs from breakfast cereal the same way Mini Cooper differs from a big SUV.

Glycemic load is the gallons of fuel. It is rated in servings. If you eat a serving of a food with a given Glycemic Index, you end up with Glycemic load of certain value. But if you eat 10 servings of that same food, you end up with 10x of Glycemic load.

Going back to the analogy, you may be driving a Mini Cooper, but if you visit a grandma in Florida instead of the other grandma on the other side of town, you are going to use a lot more gas.

Joe
