America was thru with the vietnam war. Escalation would have brought down his presidency. Sometimes you have to know when to fold them you idiot. No the President does not have to follow polls. This is a Republic not a Democracy, we elect him to do the right thing. Abandoning 2 million people to die was not the right thing. Ford did not fold he was too stupid. He lost the presidency, the pictures of the helicoptor evacuating the US embassy was the main reason why. Most people understood the war was won when the peace treaty was signed. They would not have objected so loudly when NVN invaded and broke the treaty.
