<Actually, my wife is pretty good about not overspending. >

Yes, my wife is pretty good about it, too. On the whole, she doesn't spend too much. Not a recreational shopper at all. But when she does shop, she won't go to Nordstrom Rack, it's gotta be Nordstrom's proper.

I just come from a long line of very conservative spenders. I was raised on a very tight budget (like I wondered if we'd have milk for our breakfast cereal), so it seems a bit lavish at times. If I had my old engineering salary, it would be no big deal at all. If the bear will go ahead and cooperate, it might become a non-issue again. But for now, grad student wages don't keep the bank account overflowing...

Teach her to read the legal notices in the major newspaper in your area. Send her to a few auctions hopefully she will get the bug.

================
We moved in last week and she is ALREADY planning for when she is going out on realtor caravans to find our new place!
