This election seems comparable to 1980.

In 1980, Carter was WAY ahead during the summer because people didn't really know Reagan and they were afraid the guy was all "fluff and dangerous". He pulled off the debates so well that people got comfortable with him and figured he was solid enough to take a chance on rather than continuing the "lousy" years of Carter.

If Obama does well in the debates I would expect him to win for the same reasons.

Another election that this is comparable to is 1988. During the summer of that election Dukakis had a pretty good lead in the polls, but the Bush campaign was able to "characterize" Dukakis as elitist and completely out of touch with the average American. They did that by mocking him relentlessly and playing up his rather emotionless debate performance.

If McCain can do the same with Obama, then he might be able to pull this one out.
