The red, white and blue billboard proclaims "Obama for President" and underneath, just in case there is confusion, adds "United States of America." A billboard backing the candidacy of Barak Obama for U.S. president is turning heads of drivers on the Pat Bay Highway. The full-size billboard was paid for by Dean Park residents Reg and Karen Mooney with the dual purpose of provoking family debate and putting in a personal push to get troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan. Reg Mooney, 75, a management consultant and former president of Goodwill Bottling, is a supporter of Democratic candidate Barack Obama and recently attended one of his rallies in Las Vegas. The family has strong ties to the U.S. Karen Mooney is a landed immigrant from the U.S., who has been in Canada since 1971 and their daughter Jennifer Collard -- a strong Obama supporter -- lives in Milwaukee with her husband John Collard, a Republican. The Collards will arrive in Victoria today for a visit and are almost certain to see the sign. "There should be a lot of interesting family conversations," Mooney said. However, the more serious aspect of the billboard is Mooney's conviction that the war in Iraq must stop as soon as possible, and that Canadian troops must come home from Afghanistan before there are more deaths. "I have long been disturbed by what is going on in the world as a consequence of U.S. foreign policy," he said. Canada has been prodded into Afghanistan and the result is that Canadians, instead of being seen as peacekeepers, are seen around the world as being similar to the Americans, Mooney said. "We just shouldn't be there," he said. "I took my money out of my pocket because I want Obama to win. He has a moderate view." Mooney shrugs off questions about the cost of the billboard and would say only it costs $1,250 a month to rent the space, without the costs of the poster. "If it was a million dollars it would be worth it," he said.canada.com
