"Consider it a war on foreign oil. We send $700 billion a year overseas for oil and oil is gone within 4 months of hitting our shores."

Again, I can't argue with that. Look at my posts on this subject. I think we have been foolish over the past 3 decades or so. Now Tenchu will argue that it has managed to work out, but in my mind that is the same as labeling yourself as a prospective lottery winner. Sure, it could work out, but what are the odds?

Ok, it has worked out and who can argue with success? Hate to be a party pooper, but it was a high stakes gamble. Unless you are into conspiracy theories, there was no way to know that oil prices were going to stay as low as they did for as long as they did. We were lucky and we squandered that luck.

And in squandering that luck we have devalued the sacrifice it requires to work as a country to solve these sort of problems.

"If that's socialism, so be it although I don't think it is."

It isn't. At least in my mind. But there are those on this board who beg to differ. Now personally, I don't really care if it is socialism or not. I prefer that problems get solved and I am not picky about the methods. OTOH, I don't claim to be ideologically pure. For me, ideology is a luxury. For others, that is life.
