Almonds are probably the equivalent to walnuts in health benefits. I prefer walnuts with salads or oatmeal and almonds when cooked with fish or chicken.

I don't know anything about the advantages of raw versus cooked nuts. I hope the cooked ones retain all or most of the benefits. I definitely avoid salted nuts. If the raw ones just contain a few more vitamins, well that's why we are taking vitamin pills, isn't it? Raw nuts are fairly unpalatable in general.

Speaking of nuts, macademia nut is one of my favorite nuts. High in monounsaturated fat, low in Omega 6 (almost none). One possible downside of Walnut is that it is fairly high in Omega 6.
