Have you ever looked on a map?!? Your statement about "Too much dependence on neighbors" is like saying "New York should reduce it's dependence on New Jersey". The distance between New York and New Jersey is much greater than the distance between Aachen and Liège. One of the biggest export harbors from Germany is Rotterdam, which is in Netherlands. Paris is approximately to Bonn as New York is to Washington D.C. Which one is New York's greatest export market? Washington? Delaware? Pennsylvania? Massachusetts? Or China?
