Longs Drug Stores shares fall as analyst downgrades after 31 percent run-up in stock price

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Longs Drug Stores Inc. fell Tuesday after an analyst downgraded the stock, calling its share price too high.
Credit Suisse analyst Edward Kelly downgraded the company to "Underperform" from "Neutral." In research report, he noted Longs' shares have risen 31 percent since the beginning of June, driven up by aggressive buying by activist hedge fund Pershing Square and market speculation that the company could seek alternatives for its real estate portfolio or an outright sale.

He said the share price already reflects the best case scenario of such a deal, "despite the fact that underlying fundaments have deteriorated and numerous hurdles to a transaction remain," Kelly wrote.

He said the stock -- which fell $1.07, or 1.9 percent, to $54.04 Tuesday -- should actually be trading in the high 30s.
