Ancient Greeks thought there was a body cutting across Eurasia (north-South). Perhaps they thought the Black Sea was all the way to the Baltic Sea.
Then they invented the name Europe and the Eastern Europe was named Asia.

The thing kept being called based on the mistake of the ancient Greeks probably because the Europeans didn't wasn’t to be bundled together with the Barbarians, sorry, Asians.

"The West" is a political short hand that carries a huge Cold War connotation. There are many people that didn't want to be bundled with the, then, called West - (thus the non-aligned movement). Imagine today after almost 20 years that Cold War ended one re-bundle the many nations under the West again!!!

In this new rebalanced world we need to come out with more accurate short-hands. It is difficult to imagine an imbroglio within Eurasia can be called a problem of the West unless spoken by someone who has not been alert to what has happened in the past 20 years.
