That is part of it. To the Russians, it is payback time. We jerked them around in the 1990s and they resented that. To make it worse, we kept jerking them around after they got back on their feet. To make it even worse, we have been pushing Turkey in their direction, losing the one big country in the region. Want to bet that Turkey doesn't take this as a cue to do something about Kurdistan?

Turkey is another country where we have been ignoring the signs that things are different now. Turkey has cooled on both the EU and NATO. From a geopolitical standpoint, their smartest move is to announce closer ties to Russia. Between the two of them, they could rule the region.
