It isn't an about-face. It is actually knowing something about the region. You apply pressure where it can work. You use the tools that are available.

Right. And this is part of said damage. Putin is using our invasion of Iraq as part of his justification for invading Georgia. Which, by the way, has been mentioned before. Now granted, it was framed with respect to Chechnya, but it still was given as one of the reasons why Iraq has damaged our standing.

The US at least styles itself as a world leader. And one who leads by example and not force of arms. Russia doesn't and never has. So the use of international opinion is quite different. I read a short story one time. It was a what if? sort of story which had the Nazi's invading India and Ghandi, Nehru et al tried their passive resistance like they did in our time line against the British. The results weren't the same...
