Because if faced with no alternative truth I have to stick to my one. Safe in the belief that I can back that assertive up. I am assumption-based. If I malke an assumption and gather facts that gives 'power' to said assumption, I am persuaded that the assumption is true. St the same time I start considering alternatives that 'dismantles' my assumption, thus weakning it. In the case of the West, I based on the knowledge that people are suing Cold War short hands and this misleads people into accept what became conventional wisdom. Because it is conventional or repeated by many, that doesn't turn that into truth. I call a discussion, when I present my case, and someone else has the burden to prove me wrong.
