Georgia supplies us with a classic case that allows both left and right rethink their views. Both of you and me are a bit flummoxed as what is to be done and what the overriding principles are here.
To me the most important issue is that the Russians violated international boundaries without even a pretense of seeking an international consensus much less a solution. I dont care about georgian nationalism or south ossetian nationalism or the pushed around bear psychosis in the KGB/Kremlin. What i care about is that russia has done something as bush correctly pointed out was so 20th century. So the goal s/b to get the russians back across the line separating breakaway provinces and georgia proper, the creation of an international conference to settle this issue once and for all. Georgian leaders should pay attention now and be willing to trade their Kosovo for admission to EU and Nato. Hell Georgia only has 4mm folks and there are none left in the autonomous regions, so they should be happy to rid themselves of this albatross for genuine recognition of their independence. They also have to make up with Russia because you dont want to play castros cuba to putins Russia. The Russians wont react well to a Fidel on their border.
